The responsibilities of the Senate shall be carried out under the main policies laid out by the Higher Education Council or by the Minister. The responsibilities of the Senate are specified below.

  • Planning and designing the policies that are needed to achieve the aims of the University;
  • Conducting various courses and conferring certificates, diplomas, degrees and similar awards;
  • Hiring and firing employees for the University;
  • Establishing branches of the University within the University itself of in other areas;
  • Planning and overseeing the University’s budget;
  • Formulating the regulations needed to achieve the University’s aims;
  • Setting fees, prices and fines as well as extending assistance and loans;
    Developing the University’s inventions, creations and findings for commerce;
  • Creating committees and boards to plan, carry out and research various issues for the University;
  • Establishing and developing relations with local and foreign educational institutions;
  • Training and developing employees according to the University’s regulations;
  • Establishing guidelines for business transactions that are allowed under Islamic Shariah, to achieve the University’s aims;
  • Establishing the manner of carrying out the following:
    • University entrance examinations;
    • Selecting students and enrolling them in the University;
    • Designing educational programmes;
    • Planning and developing syllabuses;
    • Administering examinations and conferring certificates;
    • Maintaining the information system;
    • Overseeing the material resources and finances of the University;
    • Establishing, developing and overseeing the University’s libraries;
    • And in addition, carrying out all activities necessary to achieve the University’s aims.

Legal Power

  • The Senate has the power to carry out the following activities as provided for in this Act and the main policies laid out by the Higher Education Council or by the Minister.
    1. Administering and controlling the University;
    2. Appointing employees of the University or others to senior positions of the University;
    3. Establishing and dissolving bodies such as Colleges, Faculties, Centres, Schools, Departments, Divisions, Institutes, and Units in order to achieve administrative and academic objectives;
    4. Administering and controlling the finances of the University;
    5. Formulating the policies for the administration of the University, and to endorse the regulations that are put forward by different organs of the University.
  • The Senate shall in all instances act according to what the Senate determines to be in the best interests of the University.
