Profile & History
Islamic University of Maldives, formerly known as the College of Islamic Studies (Kulliyah Al- Dhirasaathil Islamiyah) became a full-fledged higher education institution on 21st February 2004 (1st Muharram 1425). This change in status was initiated with the intention to widen the scope of Islamic education provided to Maldivian students who were desperately seeking Islamic education within the country without having to travel abroad.
With the change in status, College of Islamic Studies adopted an approach to teaching which focused mainly on integration of research and innovation. The purpose was to promote higher level of thinking informed by research to ensure provision of holistic understanding of Islam considered from varying perspectives and contexts.
With the new developments, College of Islamic Studies continued to offer a number of academic programs with special focus on diploma and degrees in areas such as Quranic Studies, Arabic language, Islamic Studies and Sharia and Law until it was upgraded to the first ever Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) by a presidential decree in 2015 to realize one of the highest priorities of the current government; to promote and to protect the Islamic faith in the Maldives.
IUM is grounded on a dynamic and a prospective vision and a willful and determined mission to fulfill academic training and research along with dissemination of Islamic knowledge with its applicability in the context of the modern and fast changing world.
To ensure the vision and mission of IUM is achieved, and to deliver quality education, the University has been engaged in a diligent process of reform since its inception in July 2015. This includes strengthening the management of faculties, employing new staff to ensure smooth administration and functioning of the University and review and revision of existing courses. Currently, IUM has five kulliyyahs, and four centres including newly established Centre for Research and Publication and Centre for Postgraduate Studies.
Further broaden its horizons by June 2016, IUM introduced one PhD and six masters programmes which are all new programmes in the Maldives. Currently IUM has 2 PhD programmes and 11 masters programmes.
IUM will continue to work fervently towards building a reputation for itself, both nationally and internationally with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research in Quranic and Islamic Studies, Sharia and Law, Education and many other areas.
The logo of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) includes several key symbols representative of and drawing inspiration from the Maldivian history, traditions and our religion; Islam. The central element of the logo is an open book symbolizing the Qur’an. It is indicative of the fact that the basis of all knowledge and true enlightenment comes from the Qur’an. The Qur’an also encourages the pursuit of knowledge.
The symbol of Qur’an is encompassed in a circle representing the Minaret, a key Islamic landmark in Maldives and an important symbol of Maldivian Islamic national identity. The circle representing the Minaret is indicative of continuity of human civilization and Islamic Ummah.
The intertwined rope represents Maldivian workmanship and is symbolic of national unity, strength and confluence.
The Islamic star is symbolic of Islamic faith, identity and enlightenment.
The IUM was established to serve and protect Islam and its principles in Maldivian society and the Ummah in general. The spirit of this philosophy is based on the teachings of Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) Sunnah. IUM’s philosophy is based on the first divine commandment Iqra, (read). Accordingly, the University takes the first five verses from Surath Al’Alaq as its guiding philosophy:
(1) Read! In the name of the thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created. (2) Created man, out of a leech-like clot. (3) Read! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful (4) He Who taught (the use of) the Pen (5) Taught man that which he knew not.
Thus acquisition of knowledge, practicing and preaching this knowledge is a crucial obligation of all Muslims. Seeking of knowledge is regarded as an act of worship. It is through this philosophy cherishing the everlasting pursuit of seeking knowledge that brings together members of the institution, creating one cohesive body. Embedded in this is notion of ‘ilm. ‘Ilm as IUM interprets is not confined to mere acquisition of knowledge and information only.
The divine obligation ‘to read’ also opened the way for flourishing of civilization, culture and modernity, intellectual reasoning and findings. Allah (SWT) does not command the pursuit of only Islamic knowledge but all ‘ilm from all other disciplines including knowledge about the galaxies, the mountains, and to seek truths about the life on land and seas.
IUM firmly believes that knowledge shall be transmitted in a way that it meets the fundamental requirements of Tawheed, (the Oneness of Allah). This implies the undisputed recognition of Allah (SWT) as the Absolute Creator and Master of mankind and that everything in existence originates from the one and only Creator, who is also the Sustainer and the sole Source of Guidance. The spirit of recognition of this fundamental truth represents the apex in the hierarchy of knowledge.
Knowledge in some of today’s worldviews means information about something, divine or corporal. Islamic concept of ‘ilm’ is far more expansive than mere acquisition of knowledge or information. ‘ilm embraces theory, action and education. IUM also believes that it is not only Islamic knowledge but all ‘ilm from all other disciplines that we should seek as Muslims.
We also believe that education becomes meaningful only with iman or faith. Iman in its basic meaning is belief in Allah (SWT), His prophets, revealed books, angels and hereafter and Allah’s divine decree. Iman is the boundary in human life that draws the line between belief and disbelief. It is said that nothing else in human life can possibly compensate for the loss in iman.
IUM places utmost importance to develop strong faith among its students. Fundamental to this is the upholding of high moral standards and application of ethical principles. Ethical values are properties that define us as human beings. The University will advocate the practice of ethical principles across all its academic programs as well as all co-curricular programmes.
Furthermore, Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) Hadith which instructs us to acquire knowledge from the cradle to the grave leads us to the now universally accepted importance of lifelong learning.

ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ އިސްލާމީ ޔުނިވަރސިޓީ އުފެދުނީ 9 ޖުލައި 2015 22( ރަމަޞާން )1436 ގައި ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ އިސްލާމީ ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ ބިލް ރައީސުލްޖުމްހޫރިއްޔާ ތަސްދީދު ކުރެއްވުމާ ގުޅިގެން، ކުރީގެ ކުއްލިއްޔަތުއް ދިރާސާތިލް އިސްލާމިއްޔާ، ދައުލަތުގެ ޔުނިވަރސިޓީއަކަށް ބަދަލުކުރެއްވުމުންނެވެ. މި ބަދަލަކީ، މަތީ ފެންވަރުގެ އިސްލާމީ ތަޢުލީމު އުނގެނުމަށް ބޭނުންވެފައި ތިބި ދިވެހި ދަރީންނަށް، އަމިއްލަ ވަޒަނުގައި ތިބެގެން ތަޢުލީމު ޙާޞިލުކުރެވޭނެ މަގު ފަހިކޮށްދެއްވުމުގެ ގޮތުން ގެނެވުނު ބަދަލެކެވެ. ހަމައެހެންމެ މިއީ ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގައި އިސްލާމީ ޢަޤީދާ ސާބިތުކަމާއެކު ދެމެހެއްޓުމުގެ މަތިވެރި ޢަޒުމުގައި އަދުގެ ސަރުކާރުން އެންމެ އިސްކަންދޭ ކަމުގެ ފުރިހަމަ ރަމްޒެކެވެ.
މިގެނެވުނުބަދަލާއެކު، ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ އިސްލާމީ ޔުނިވަރސިޓީއަކީ، އުނގަންނައިދިނުމާއި ދިރާސާތައްކުރުމާއި އައު އުފެއްދުންތަކަށް ޚާއްޞަ މަސައްކަތްތަކެއް ކުރާ ތަޢުލީމީ އިދާރާއަކަށް ވެގެންދިއައެވެ. މި ބަދަލުގެ މައިގަނޑު މަޤްޞަދަކީ، މަތީފެންވަރުގެ ވިސްނުންތަކަށް ފުރުސަތު ތަނަވަސްކޮށްދީ އަދި އިސްލާމް ދީން ޝާމިލުވެގެންވާގޮތެއްގައި ތަފާތު، ނައްޞުތަކާއި، ނަޒަރިއްޔާތުގެ ތެރެއިން އިސްލާމު ދީން ރަގަޅަށް ފަހުމުވެ އެ މާތް ދީނުގެ ތަޢުލީމާއި އިރުޝާދުގެ އަލީގައި އުފެއްދުންތެރި ބިނާކުރަނިވި މުސްލިމު ދަރިން ތަރުބިޔަތު ކުރުމެވެ.
އައި. ޔޫ. އެމް ބިނާވެގެންވަނީ، ޙަރަކާތްތެރި، ފުޅާ ތަޞައްވުރާއި، ޢިލްމީ އަރުތަ ހާޞިލުކުރުމުގެ ވަރުގަދަ ޢަޒުމެއްގެ މައްޗަށެވެ. ޢިލްމީތަމްރީނާއި، ޢިލްމީ ދިރާސާތައްކުރުމާއި، އިސްލާމީ ތަޢުލީމު ޢާއްމުކުރުމުގެ އަމާޒަށް ވާޞިލުވުމުގެ މައްޗަށެވެ. ބަދަލުވަމުންދާ ދުނިޔޭގެ ތަފާތު މަސްރަޙުތަކުގައި ބޭނުންކުރެވޭނެ މަޢުލޫމާތުތައް ފޯރުކޮށްދިނުމުގެ މައްޗަށެވެ.
އައި. ޔޫ. އެމްގެ ތަޞައްވުރާއި، މިޝަން ކާމިޔާބުވުން ކަށަވަރުކުރުމަށްޓަކައި، އަދި ފެންވަރުހުރި ތަޢުލީމުދިނުމަށްޓަކައި 2015 ވަނަ އަހަރުންފެށިގެން ޙަރަކާތްތެރިވަމުން ދަނީ، އައު ބަދަލުތަކާއި އައު އީޖާދުތައް ތާޢާރަފުކުރުމުގައެވެ .މިގޮތުން، ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ ކުއްލިއްޔާތަކާއި ސެންޓަރުތައް ހިންގުން ހަރުދަނާކުރުމަށާއި، ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ އިދާރީ ހިންގުން ހަލުވިކުރުމަށްޓަކައި ހުނަރުވެރި ޤާބިލު މުއައްޒަފުންނަށް ވަޒީފާދިނުމާއި، އައު ކޯސްތައް ފަރުމާކުރުމާއި، ކުރީގެ ކޯސްތައް މުރާޖަޢާ ކުރުމަށް ގިނަގުނަ މަސައްކަތްތަކެއް ކުރެވުނެވެ.
މިވަގުތު، އައި. ޔޫ. އެމްގައި ހުރީ ފަސް ކުއްލިއްޔާއާއި ހަތަރު ސެންޓަރެވެ. އޭގެތެރޭގައި، ރިސާރޗް އެންޑް ޕަބްލިކޭޝަން ސެންޓަރާއި، ޕޯސްޓްގްރެޖުއޭޓް ސެންޓަރު ހިމެނެއެވެ. މިތަންތަނުން ގިނަ އަދަދެއްގެ ތަޢުލީމީ ޕްރޮގްރާމުތަކުގައި ޑިޕްލޮމާއާއި، ޑިގްރީއާއި މާސްޓަރސް ފެންވަރަށް، ޤުރްއާނުގެ ޢިލްމާއި ޢަރަބި ބަހާއި އިސްލާމީ ތަރުބިޔަތާއި، އެޑިޔުކޭޝަނާއި، ޝަރީޢާތާއި ޤާނޫނު ކިޔަވައިދޭން ފެށުނެވެ. ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ އުދަރެސް އިތުރަށް ފުޅާކުރުމަށްޓަކައި، ޑޮކްޓޯރަލް (ފީ.އެޗް.ޑީ) ކޯހެއް ތަޢާރަފުކުރެވުނެވެ.
އައި. ޔޫ. އެމް، ސާބިތުކަމާއެކު މަސައްކަތްކުރަނީ، ޤައުމީ ފެންވަރުގައްޔާއި ބައިނަލް އަޤްވާމީ ފެންވަރުގައި، ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ ތަޞައްވުރު ދުވަހެއް ދުވަހަކަށް ހަރުދަނާކުރުމަށެވެ. ޤުރްއާނާއި އިސްލާމީ ތަރުބިޔަތާއި ޝަރީޢާއާއި ޤާނޫނާއި އެޑިޔުކޭޝަންގެ ރޮނގުންނާއި އަދިވެސް ޤައުމަށް ބޭނުންތެރި މުހިންމު ރޮނގު ރޮނގުން، އުނގަންނައި ދިނުމާއި ދިރާސާކުރުމަށް ޚާއްޞަ ސަމާލުކަމެއް ދެވޭ މުއައްސަސާއެއްގެ ގޮތުގައި ދެމިއޮތުމަށެވެ.

ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ އިސްލާމީ ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ ނިޝާން (ލޯގޯ) ގައި ވަރަށް މުހިއްމު ރަމްޒުތަކެއް ހިމެނެއެވެ. މި ރަމްޒުތައް ތަމްޘީލުކޮށްދެނީ، އިސްލާމްދީނާއި، ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ ތާރީޚާއި ޘަޤާފަތެވެ.
އައި.ޔޫ.އެމްގެ ނިޝާން (ލޯގޯ)ގައި ޝާމިލުވަނީ ޤައުމީ އަދި އިސްލާމީ ޝަޙުޞިއްޔަތެވެ. އެހެންވީމާ، ލޯގޯގެ ކުލައިގެ ގޮތުގައި ހިމެނޭ ފެހިކުލައަކީ، ދިވެހި ދިދައިގައި ހިމެނޭ ކުލަތަކުން ކުލައެކެވެ. އަދި ރަންކުލަ ރަމްޒުކޮށްދެނީ، ޢިލްމުގެ މުހިއްމުކަމާއި އަގުބޮޑުކަމެވެ.
ލޯގޯގައި ހިމެނޭ މުހިއްމު ހަތަރު ބަޔަކީ: ކީރިތި ޤުރްއާން ރަމްޒުކޮށްދޭ ފޮތާއި، ވަށްބުރާއި، ރޯނުފަށާއި އިސްލާމީ ތަރިއެވެ. މި ހަތަރުބައަކީ، ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ އިސްލާމީ ޔުނިވަރސިޓީ ފާޅުކޮށް ތަމްޘީލުކޮށްދޭ އަސާސީ ބައިތަކެވެ. މި ބައިތައް ސިފަކޮށްދެނީ، ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ މިޝަންކަމުގައިވާ، އިސްލާމީ އަގުތަކާއި ޢިލްމު ފެތުރުމާއި، ޤައުމީ ޚިދުމަތުގައި އެންމެ އުސްމިނަށް ވާސިލުވުމުގައި ދެމިތިބުމުގެ ހިތްވަރެވެ.
ލޯގޯގެ މެދުގައިވަނީ، ކީރިތި ޤުރްއާން ރަމްޒުކޮށްދޭ ކުރެހުމެވެ. މި ރަމުޒުން ދޭހަކޮށްދެނީ، ޢިލްމާއި، ހޭލުންތެރިކަމުގެ އަސާސަކީ ކީރިތި ޤުރްއާންކަމެވެ. އަދި ހަމައެހެންމެ، މި ރަމްޒުން ހިތްވަރު ލިބިގެންދަނީ، ޢިލްމު އުނގެނުމުގައި ދެމިތިބުމަށެވެ. ކީރިތި ޤުރްއާން ރަމްޒުކޮށްދޭ ފޮތް ވަށައިލެވިފައިވާ ބުރުން ރަމްޒުކޮށްދެނީ، މާލޭ ހުކުރު މިސްކިތު މުންނާރެވެ. މި ރަމްޒު ތަމްޘީލުކޮށްދެނީ، ވާރުތަވަމުންއައި އިންސާނީ ޙަޟާރަތާއި އިސްލާމީ އުއްމަތެވެ.
ގެތިފައިވާ ރޯނުފަށް ތަމްޘީލުކޮށްދެނީ، ދިވެހި ޤައުމިއްޔަތުގެ ވަޙްދަތާއި، ދިވެހި މަސައްކަތްތެރިކަމުގެ ހުނަރުވެރި ނަމޫނާއެވެ.
ވަށައިގެންވާ ތަރި ރަމްޒުކޮށްދެނީ، އިސްލާމީ ޢަޤީދާއާއި، އިސްލާމީ ޝަޚްޞިއްޔަތާއި އިސްލާމީ ހޭލުންތެރިކަމެވެ.
އައި.ޔޫ.އެމްގެ ފަލްސަފާ

ޔުނިވަރސިޓީގެ ފަލްސަފާ ހިމެނިގެންވަނީ، އަލްޢަލަޤު ސޫރަތުގެ ފުރަތަމަ ފަސް އާޔަތުގައެވެ.
ކަލޭގެފާނުގެވެރި ރަސްކަލާނގެ އިސްމުފުޅުން ކަލޭގެފާނު ކިޔަވައިވިދާޅުވާށެވެ! އެކަލާނގެއީ (ހުރިހާ ތަކެއްޗެއް) ހެއްދެވި ރަސްކަލާނގެއެވެ. ގަނޑު ލޭކޮޅަކުން އެކަލާނގެ އިންސާނާ ހެއްދެވިއެވެ. ކަލޭގެފާނު ކިޔަވައިވިދާޅުވާށެވެ! އަދި ކަލޭގެފާނުގެ ވެރި ރަސްކަލާނގެއީ އެންމެ ދީލަތިވަންތަ ރަސްކަލާނގެއެވެ. އެކަލާނގެއީ (ޤަލަމުން) ލިޔަން އުނގަންނައިދެއްވި ރަސްކަލާނގެއެވެ. އިންސާނާއަށް އޭނާ ނުދަންނަ ކަންތައް، އެކަލާނގެ އުނގަންނައި ދެއްވިއެވެ.
އައި.ޔޫ. އެމްގެ ފަލްސަފާ ބިނާވެގެންވަނީ، ﷲއީ، ހުރިހާ ތަކެއްޗެއް ހެއްދެވި ޚާލިޤުވަންތަ ރަސްކަލާނގެކަމަށް އީމާންވުމުގެ މަތިވެރި ޢަޤީދާގެ މައްޗަށެވެ. އެހެންކަމުން ޔުނިވަރސިޓީން ދެވޭ ތަޢުލީމުގެ ތެރޭގައި ޝާމިލުވެގެންވަނީ ތައުޙީދުގެ ރޫޙެވެ. އެހެންވީމާ، ޢިލްމުގެ މަންހަޖާއި، ޢިލްމު ބޭނުންކުރުމުގެ ތަރަހައަކީ، ކީރިތި ޤުރްއާނާއި ސުންނަތެވެ.
މި ބިމުގައި ލެއްވި، މާތްﷲ މާތްކުރެއްވި، ޚަލީފަތުﷲ ގެ ޙައިޘިއްޔަތުން އަދާކުރަންޖެހޭ މަސްއޫލިއްޔަތަކީ، ޤައުމާއި އިސްލާމީ އުއްމަތް ބިނާކުރުމުގެ މުހިއްމު މަސްއޫލިއްޔަތެވެ.
